DeLillo Fronts The Onion

One of my favourite writers, Don DeLillo, makes the front cover of The Onion.

Awesome. I love that magazine. DeLillo is by far the best prose stylist I’ve ever come across. Underworld is perhaps the greatest novel. Sometimes, when some of his paragraphs are flying with cool structure and word selection, there is nothing better. Nothing. He’s an old dog, too, which makes me think that it’s the sum of a vast career, the peak. Something to look forward to about getting older.

  1. I’ll get round to DeLillo one day, but the doorsteps he writes have scared me off even leafing through a copy. Has he written anything a bit… shorter?

  2. Yep. Underworld is pretty much the only doorstep at around 800 pages (staggeringly, not one of them bad). Maybe Libra is quite chunky. There’s White Noise which is pretty slim. Cosmopolis, Falling Man: they’re both very slender volumes too.

But just set aside a month for Underworld. It really is the novel about… everything.
