    While I’m for all things Bacchanalian, this depiction of a celebration is much too clean for my taste. You’ve read Euripides’ The Bacchae, I hope? If not, you should. One of my favourites.

    I know what you mean, but there seem to be very few paintings of classical events to ever really dirty things up. 

    Not read it, but think I’ve seen it on stage and not for many a year. And not with any true appreciation of it, to be honest, so thanks for reminding me – I will rectify.
