Halfway between wild and dangerous things which need to be controlled and “my precious, mine”.

Yes! I much prefer to think of them as wild and dangerous books. Books with ATTITUDE. The chains are there to protect us, not the books.

I was once accidentally locked in to Hereford Cathedral’s Mappa Mundi exhibit - I was about eleven and didn’t notice I’d been locked in until about twenty minutes later when an attendant hurried in apologising.

That actually sounds like quite a good place to be locked in. Was that 11pm?

No, I was eleven years old; my dad had half the cathedral staff running round looking for me.  Even at the time I thought it was quite cool that I’d been locked in (my dad didn’t).  The maps were really amazing.

Very Discworld! In which case, the chains are DEFINITELY there for our protection.
