Plug For C.J. Sansom’s Shardlake Series

See bloggers – I can get free books too!

This is a bit of a shameless plug for fellow Pan Macmillan author C.J. Sansom’s Matthew Shardlake Series. (I promised my editor, Julie, I’d do so if she sent me free books.) They look just my thing, I’ll admit. A spot of medieval crime.

Here’s the blurb of the first novel, Dissolution.

Henry VIII has proclaimed himself Supreme Head of the Church and the country is waking up to savage new laws, rigged trials and the greatest network of informers ever seen. Under the order of Thomas Cromwell, a team of commissioners is sent through the country to investigate the monasteries. There can only be one outcome: the monasteries are to be dissolved. But on the Sussex coast, at the monastery of Scarnsea, events have spiralled out of control. Cromwell’s Commissioner Robin Singleton, has been found dead, his head severed from his body. His horrific murder is accompanied by equally sinister acts of sacrilege – a black cockerel sacrificed on the alter, and the disappearance of Scarnsea’s Great Relic. Dr Matthew Shardlake, lawyer and long-time supporter of Reform, has been sent by Cromwell into this atmosphere of treachery and death. But Shardlake’s investigation soon forces him to question everything he hears, and everything that he intrinsically believes …

  1. These sound interesting. The blurb of the first novel reminds me of “The Name of the Rose” (I liked that novel, but with the exceptions of quite some lengthy passages 😉 ).

  2. Yes, I’m reading that now actually, which is why I was interested in this. And I know exactly what you mean – some of those descriptions are endless!

  3. ha, well you know how I feel about shameless. 🙂

  4. For me it is very interesting. Of course I read “The Name of the Rose”. Beside this I have read the whole Cadfael series by Ellis Peters and I loved the Sorrowful Mysteries of Brother Athelstan series by Paul Harding. It seems I have to take a deeper look at the books of C.J. Sansom.

  5. would you believe i have these at my bedside going through now.

The bit i have read so far is intense but i am loving it…

hope you like them too …

  6. edifanob – I’ve heard of the Cadfael series. I think that was made into a TV series, too, a few years ago…

Erotic – intense is good. Though I’m not sure anything can be as intense of “The Name of the Rose”. Anything after that would be light relief!

  7. Mark, that’s correct. To my pleasure the series have been aired on German TV several years ago. Derek Jacoby acted as brother Cadfael. The series is still available on DVD. Cadfael – The Complete Collection – Series 1 to 4

I like to read this kind of books as a counterpart to all the fantasy stuff I inhale….

  9. Hi Ruth, thanks for dropping by. Hope you managed to sleep well in the end.

Yup, that’s true. Branagh is a great actor – I really loved his interpretation of Wallander (I was a fan of the books too). I’ll need to get these read before the TV series starts!

  10. I have narrated 3 of the Shardlake series : Sovereign, Dark Fire and Revelation as Audiobooks for Recorded Books LLC here in New York. They are wonderful and a real pleasure to read aloud. They can be downloaded at Audible.com or rented/bought from recordedbooks.com Enjoy.
